About Thomas Carroll

Thomas Carroll I am a man with a camera. As many others have done and do, I strive to see the world in different ways. I enjoy finding unique subjects and creating photographs that stimulate the senses and spark the imagination.

The camera is my pallet and brush. I use it to capture a moment or moments in time that reveal something new, transcendent or beautiful. I follow the light. I experiment. I am inspired by the magic of the image and poetry in the arts; especially photography, cinema, painting and sculpture. Connecting with the imagination, technique and energy of other artists, past and present, is enlightening. The communion with creativity encourages me to join the quest to make something beautiful, truthful and timeless.To share the pleasure of a unique experience or a creative thought is the final link that brings a work to life.

If I were to write a simple treatise on art it would be something like this. I visualize the artist as a mirror that reflects a truth on multiple levels. The artist's physical experience mirrors the outside world, the culture, the linear environment, etc. The mirror also reflects the artist's imagination, consciousness, subconscious from the inside non-linear world. I imagine the mirror to be both transparent and reflective in each direction.

Ultimately, the union of the reflections from the outside and inside worlds creates a spark or catalyst that brings something unique, beautiful and truthful to life. At that creative moment the image transcends the artist and becomes a work with a voice that speaks for itself. I hope that my work reaches you in this way.

I studied filmmaking at the State University of New York at Binghamton (Bachelor of Arts Cinema, 1974). I am self taught as a photographer. Looking through the lens, seeing and thinking of something special and clicking the shutter are experiences that I enjoy and like to share.
