Description
In Boca Grande Florida we met two people who told us about the mysterious and elusive Green Flash. They had never seen it. They had only heard about a special phenomena at sunset. A week later we witnessed what appears to be the legendary Green Flash or the rare Green Ray. It was a beautiful evening sky on both horizons. It appeared right after a storm subsided. Two rainbows appeared in the east as the sun was going down over the Gulf of Mexico.
I believe this abstract shows the effects of the legendary Green Flash-Green Ray as seen from Gasparilla Island, Boca Grande, Florida, February 23, 2017.
Our friends who told us about Green Flash never got to see it. They left Florida a week before this sunset.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Green flashes and green rays are optical phenomena that sometimes occur right before sunset or right after sunrise. When the conditions are right, a green spot is visible above the upper rim of the disk of the sun. The green appearance usually lasts for no more than a second or two. Rarely, the green flash can resemble a green ray shooting up from the sunset (or sunrise) point. Green flashes occur because the atmosphere can cause the light from the sun to separate out into different colors. Green flashes are a group of phenomena which stem from slightly different causes, and therefore some types of green flashes are more common than others.
